 A Nigerian short film is making significant waves on the international film scene. “Tears for Enebi”—a 16-minute film portraying the real-life ordeal of Enebi Annah, a celebrated beauty queen and poet—tells the harrowing story of how her life is upended when her trusted mentor and confidant rapes her. The deepest betrayal, however, is revealed in a shocking twist: the perpetrator also leads Africa’s most prominent anti-rape organization.

Since its debut, the film has been selected for nearly 20 film festivals worldwide, including the Independent Short Awards in Los Angeles, where it took home two major honors: Best Women Short Film and Best Actress for Rahmah Zakareeyah’s powerful lead performance. The film has also been featured at The Film Collective Film Festival in Virginia, among many others. Its most recent accolade comes with its selection for the Miami Beach Film Festival, marking it as one of the few African short films to be showcased at the prestigious event, scheduled for May 5th, 2026.

“Tears for Enebi” is produced by Godspower Oshodin, in association with Solution Media Studios, Mogson Productions, Purplemat Entertainment, and M2Net Studios. Nigerian singer and songwriter Gabriel Omavoran Williams, professionally known as KiNg TeMi, releases his new single “Amala Meji,” a socially reflective Afro-soul and Afrobeats record that examines themes of inequality, greed, and the emotional cost of silence in the face of imbalance. 

 

Built on metaphor and repetition, Amala Meji tells a universal story: many people rely on a figure meant to protect and provide, only for that figure to become self-serving and disconnected. Through chant-driven hooks, indigenous expressions, and street-rooted lyricism, the song asks what happens when shared resources are controlled by a few while others are left to endure quietly. 

Rather than adopting an aggressive or overtly political tone, Amala Meji speaks with restraint and emotional clarity. Its power lies in its relatability, capturing the quiet frustration of people who recognize injustice but feel unable to challenge it openly. 

Commenting on the inspiration behind the record, KiNg TeMi says:

KiNg TeMi’s sound reflects a rich blend of soulful melodies and Afrobeats, shaped by contemporary influences and deep musical heritage. His artistic foundation draws from classic Nigerian music, including Juju legends I.K. Dairo, King Sunny Ade, and Dele Abiodun, as well as the revolutionary work of Fela Anikulapo Kuti, sounds he absorbed early through his late father’s stereo. 

Although his musical journey formally began in high school, KiNg TeMi’s connection to music goes beyond passion or profession. Born and raised in Lagos, Nigeria, with roots in Delta State, his early influences included Hip-hop artists like Junior and Pretty, particularly their hit “Monica.” Music has always been an intrinsic part of his life, a connection that shapes his approach to storytelling, sound, and expression. 

Amala Meji is now available on digital platforms, including TikTok, where listeners are encouraged to use the sound to share personal stories, emotions, and reflections on everyday imbalance. On Saturday night at the Grammys Special Merit Awards, Fela Kuti was honored alongside music icons Chaka Khan, Cher, Carlos Santana, Paul Simon, and Whitney Houston, placing Afrobeat firmly within the canon of global music history. The honour was presented by the Recording Academy in Los Angeles, with his children, Yeni, Femi, Kunle, and Shalewa Kuti, accepting the award on his behalf, celebrating his lasting Afrobeat legacy. One name drawing renewed interest amid this moment is Shalewa Kuti.

Shalewa Kuti, born Omosalewa Anikulapo-Kuti, is far from a background figure in Afrobeat history. She is a DJ, music producer, creative entrepreneur, and studied law, known in music circles as DJ Shaarks. Her work places her at the intersection of Afrobeat’s roots and its contemporary global evolution, a position that has become especially relevant as the Grammys spotlight Afrobeat’s origins.

Unlike the performance-led paths of some of her siblings, Shalewa carved her own lane behind the scenes and on the turntables. She studied Mass Communication at Moshood Abiola Polytechnic before going on to study law at the University of Lagos. Her academic background reflects a deliberate blend of media, communication, and legal knowledge, tools that later informed her approach to music, culture, and creative business.

Her career spans DJ culture, music production, and event curation, with a clear focus on Afrobeat-inspired sounds and cross-border collaborations. Under her imprint Shaarks Music, she has released and promoted projects that connect Afrobeat’s foundational sound with contemporary African club culture, including collaborations with South African artists and DJs.

Shalewa Kuti has also played a direct role in expanding Afrobeat’s global footprint through her involvement with Felabration, the annual celebration of Fela’s life, music, and political legacy. In 2019, she organized Felabration UK, helping take the festival beyond Nigeria and introducing Afrobeat’s history to new international audiences, a move that closely mirrors the Grammys’ growing recognition of African music and its origins.

The timing of Fela Kuti’s Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award has placed renewed emphasis on Afrobeat’s origin story, especially as Afrobeats continues to dominate global charts and festivals.
